Collection / Stephen Johnstone

Stephen Johnstone is a London-based artist and filmmaker and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art at Goldsmiths College, London.

Stephen Johnstone has worked in collaboration with Graham Ellard since 1993. Their work, including film, large scale installation, architectural light-works, and drawing, has been shown in galleries and museums in Europe and America, including the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Liverpool, the Museum of Modern Art, Sydney, and the National Film Theatre, London.

Their interests centre on the intersections of cinema and architecture, concern both with the illusionistic space of the image and the physical space within which the image is encoutered. Often recasting the viewer as a performer the work deliberatly engages the mobile point of view in an immersive or architectural environment. The work is informed by a consideration of the 'pre-history' of cinema as well as its contemporary convetions. Recent and current projects emphasise a concern a concern with the interrelationships between idealism and architecture and the language of film.
