As part of the History of Moving Image in New Contemporaries project, LUX has been working with New Contemporaries to help investigate the moving image works shown over its 60 year history and the stories around them.
1965 was the first year films were ever shown as part of the Young Contemporaries exhibition (as it was known until 1974), as the selection committee decided to 'spice things up', as one of the selectors put it, with a controversial selection of films. Hence we unexpectedly find Mel Brooks, showing alongside Kenneth Anger and William S Burroughs, together with Bruce Lacey and Pierre Etaix. Below we bring together a selection of online clips from the films selected for that inaugural screening.
