Summary findings from the 2010 LUX survey of UK artists who work with the moving image. The purpose of the survey was to attempt to take a snapshot of the current state of moving image practice in the UK, primarily for LUX to use for in terms of thinking about how it might serve the sector better, but also to share the data with peer organisations to generally create a better understanding of the area as a whole. Leading on from this survey LUX will be undertaking some more detailed research with individual artists to better understand some of the issues that came up in the survey.
LUX moving image survey summary 2010
In terms of immediate responses to the survey LUX is planning the following (some of these things will be predicated on us finding the funding and more information will follow in the monthly LUXNEWSWIRE):
- Sales. Organise a workshop for artists exploring how moving image works are brought and sold, and develop a model sales contract for artists which will be made available for free from LUX.
- Distribution. LUX has limited capacity in terms of the amount of works it can distribute and the artists it can work with, but there is quite a demand for help in this area. So we will organise a regular session for artists looking at self-distribution and promotion drawing on our knowledge and experience.
- Artists Production workshops. LUX will set up a series of artists' workshops looking a specific technical issues related to moving image production.
- Networking. LUX will set up a series of portfolio sessions where artists can meet and discuss their work with curators and programmers.
more ideas to follow.. but do let us know what else you would like to see LUX doing. If you have questions please contact survey@lux.org.uk
